Card Odds

Card Odds are the odds that you will make your hand if you are on a draw.
There are many charts outlines the card odds out there. However, even many
experienced players think that it is too much work to memorize all the
numbers. Therefore, I am going to introduce an 'easy to remember' way to
estimate the card odds. When there are still two community cards to come
(after the flop), multiply your outs by 4. When there is still one community
card to come (after the turn), multiply your outs by 2. For example, if you have
eight outs (open-ended straight) and you just see the flop (2 more cards
coming out), you can estimate your odd to complete the straight (8 * 4) = 32%.
You have 32% chance to complete the straight. Now a garbage card drop on
the turn, the odd to complete the straight is (8 * 2) = 16%. This is a very useful
way to estimate the odd without having a calculator.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are some examples, make sure you understand it all if you are new to
poker.

You have K♣Q♣, and the flop is 8♣3♣2♥. What is the card odds to complete the
flush on the turn?

Of the 47 unknown cards remaining, there are nine clubs which will
complete your flush. Therefore, you have nine outs. The odd to complete your
hand on the turn is 38:9 or about 4:1, and you have (9 * 4) = 36% chance to
complete your hand when both turn and river show.

You have K♣Q♣, and the flop is J♣10♥2♦. What is the card odds to complete
the flush/straight on the turn?

Of the 47 unknown cards remaining, there are nine clubs which will
complete your flush and eight cards which will complete your straight, but
two of the eight cards are clubs. So you have 15 outs. The odd to complete
your hand on the turn is 32:15, or about 2:1, and you have (15 * 4) = 60%
chance to complete your hand when both turn and river show.

You have J♣J♥, and the flop brings a J♦T♦9♥2♣. What is the card odds to
complete your hand?

Of the 46 unknown cards remaining, a jack will give you four of a kind and
any ten, nine or two will give you a full house. So you have 10 outs. The odds
to complete your hand on the river is 36:10, or about 3.6:1, and you have (10
* 2) = 20% chance to complete your hand on the river.
